GOVT, UNIONS TO RETURN TO BARGAINING CHAMBER

Pretoria - Government has responded to President Jacob Zuma's directive to hold urgent talks with union leaders to find a solution that will bring an end to the public service strike.

This follows a meeting between Zuma and ministers at the weekend. Government said in a statement that Minister of Public Service and Administration Richard Baloyi had been consulting with union leaders with a view to finding a settlement.  [read more]

The article by Yolande Nel entitled “No state of urgency for Limpopo government” that appeared in the Polokwane Observer dated 27-29 August 2010 is factually inaccurate and misleading.

It is common course that public sector unions are embarking on industrial action. However, since the beginning of the industrial action alluded to above the Limpopo provincial government has asserted its commitment to provide services to the people of the province particularly in hospitals and clinics. ZUMA IN CHINA TO BOOST TIES

Pretoria - President Jacob Zuma has arrived in China for a four-day state visit to boost trade with China, South Africa's largest export destination by country.

The visit forms part of a worldwide tour to expand ties with fast-growing emerging economies. South Africa is clamouring to become the fifth member of the BRIC economies which comprise Brazil, Russia, India, and China. Zuma has already had interactions with the Heads of State from Brazil, Russia and India. [read more]

GOVT TO SPEED UP HOUSING PLANS

Johannesburg - Human Settlements Minister Tokyo Sexwale has acknowledged that the demand for housing in South Africa remained very high and government would need to speed up its plans to address the backlog estimated at over 2 million.

Speaking at the launch of Lufhereng Housing Project, a new housing development initiative situated in Soweto, on Tuesday, Sexwale agreed that the R18 billion set aside by National Treasury for housing will not be enough to meet the current housing challenges.  [read more]
 

HOME AFFAIRS TO CRACK DOWN ON FRAUDULENT IDs

Pretoria - The Department of Home Affairs is working on rolling out an online Identity Document (ID) verification system which is expected to crack down fraudulent documentation.

The project will allow the South African Social Security Agency (Sassa), banks, insurance and retail sector, among others real time access to the Home Affairs National Identification System (HANIS), for the verification of the identity of prospective and current clients. [read more]

WOMEN ENCOURAGED TO SEIZE FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES

Polokwane - Women in Limpopo who are interested in farming have been encouraged to apply for funding through the Limpopo Employment, Growth and Development Plan (LEGDP).

Addressing Women's Day celebrations at Ga-Mphahlele outside Polokwane on Monday, Premier Cassel Mathale said the LEGDP was an effort by the province to fund women cooperatives in agriculture in an effort to break the cycle of poverty among women. He said the LEGDP also provided funding for business opportunities in the mining and infrastructure development sectors. "We should dedicate this Women's Day celebration to women who continue to endure the harshness of poverty, underdevelopment and unemployment.  [read more]

Giyani - Limpopo residents, whose RDP houses were never completed, have been urged to come forward and register their cases before the end of September.
