Limpopo launches its own HRDC

By Maanda Mulaudzi

The Limpopo Government had recently launched its own Human Resource Development Council. The launching ceremony was held at The Ranch Hotel, Polokwane on 05 March 2015.

The Council is tasked with providing information in terms of progress, challenges and interventions regarding skills development in the Province. To make it effective, the Premier will be the Chairperson of this Council and its membership include MECs, members of the business community, labour, civil society and academia.

Provinces that have already established their own HRD Provincial Councils are Northern Cape, Free State, Kwazulu Natal, Western Cape and Eastern Cape.

In his speech delivered by Mr. Jerry Ndou, Premier Chupu Mathabatha said that his province does not only compete with the private sector for scares skills, but it also find itself having to compete with more developed and obviously attractive provinces like Gauteng. The Province also has a challenge of a skills mismatch, particularly in the municipalities and this is negatively affecting the delivery of services to our communities.

He remarked that there was a need to retrain and re-skilled the public servants, particularly those who have been in the system for a very long period and that it was important for his government to have working partnerships with academic institutions in the province, mostly with SETA and FET sectors so that their programmes are able to respond to the skills demands of this province.
