The Limpopo Provincial Government and Polokwane Municipality launched the name of the new Integrated Rapid Transport System on the 25 August 2016 in Jack Botes Hall, Polokwane. The Premier of Limpopo, Mr Chupu Stanley Mathabatha and Executive Mayor of Polokwane Cllr Thembi Nkadimeng unveiled the name of the new Rapid Transport System called Leeto la Polokwane.

Leeto la Polokwane means the journey of Polokwane.  “The journey of Polokwane adequately captures historical influences, future aspirations, culture, spirit and way of life” Cllr Nkadimeng said.  She continues to say people of Polokwane should not stop moving but continue with their journey. “When you come to the city in the morning you see a lot of people in transit and in the afternoon they go out and continue in the journey of life” she said.

The Premier said this system makes Limpopo to be in the better position like other Provinces. “The new Integrated Rapid System in Polokwane place Limpopo Province on equal footing with the other Provinces” he said. He continues to say “this indeed is democracy at work in this Province.” He says this because residents of Polokwane were afforded an opportunity to name their new transport system. The municipality received over 1500 names and through electronic methods of voting they shortlisted names agreed upon. One of the shortlisted participants received R1000 and the other six received R500 Mall of the North vouchers to thank them for their participation.

The Executive Mayor promises that the system will start operating in June 2018. Commuters of Polokwane can also expect new bus terminals for shelter while waiting for their bus.
