First Vuwani School to receive new classrooms after the burning

By: Tiyani Chabalala

The Vhafamadi Secondary School which is situated at Mashau Village, Vuwani in Vhembe District receives a new school. The new building is donated to the community by M. Shandukani Foundation after the school was burnt during the municipality demarcation protest in the area.

The project started early August and is expected to be finished by 22 of November 2016.

The new building consists of 15 classrooms with an office each and one administration building. The building is expected to start operating first thing when the next academic year starts. The principal, Mr Thenga Mashau said “I am happy that we are the first school to get a new building after the protests and we are very thankful to the donor”.

The Grade 12 learner Ms Sidimela Nirini said, “The community is happy for the new structure. Unfortunately some of us will not be here to use it but my advice to learners who will be using it next year is that they must take care of it because some people were not as blessed as we are here in Vhafamadi. The Vhafamadi will be the only of 31 schools that received a new building since the protest in Vuwani”.

Learners of Vuwani in Grade 12 had to relocate to three centres during the protests. The traditional leaders then took the decision to allow schooling after three months of protest. Since then learners and teachers and community put all the dedication to education. Thanks to the catch–up plan implemented by the department.

Examinations in the Province are continuing smoothly except for the Mathematics paper 2 that leaked last week in area of Giyani. It was found during the preliminary investigations that the original leak of this paper is in Gauteng.  The department is continuing with investigations with the help of law enforcement agencies. Many learners of Vuwani area promised both the MEC, Ntate Ishmael Kgetjepe and the minister to work hard and produce good results when 2016 grade 12 examination results are announced on the 5th January 2017. The Provincial results will be announced in a venue still to be confirmed in the City of Polokwane.
