As the world commemorated International Women’s day, Limpopo province joined the commemorations in a very dignified event which was held at the Mokwakwaila stadium in the Greater Letaba Municipality.
The day is celebrated annually and is intended to celebrate the social, economic cultural and achievements of women which includes the movement for women’s rights.
Acting Premier of the day, honourable MEC Makoma Makhurupetje of Co-operative Governance, Human Settlement and Traditional Affairs addressed residents of Mokwakwaila about the importance of the day.
She said that the province saw it befitting to celebrate the day by honouring women in rural communities; following their tremendous impact in the society and urged the society to respect women and not violate their rights.
“We are here as women because we also want to be counted in the world of women and our rights must not be neglected” said the acting Premier
She used the event to talk about the challenges, poverty and high rate of unemployment faced by many women in South Africa, citing that citizens must unite in an attempt to eradicate them.
More often, women are heading their households by the little money that they make from being employed as domestic workers and street vendors and commemorating international day is one of the day that such women are saluted and recognised for being pillar of strength to their families and the society at large
