Mapela Clinic to operate for 24 hours, says Health MEC

The Limpopo Province Department of Health have responded to calls from residents of Mapela village outside Mokopane following a request to operate their local clinic for 24 hours.

Health MEC Dr Phophi Ramathuba has confirmed, in May 2017, that the Mapela local clinic will operate all day long as soon as the department hires more qualified nurses.

In response to the residents’ request, Dr Ramathuba insisted that she has recently hired two midwives to assist at the clinic prior to the launch of an upcoming 24 hour operation program.

The MEC stressed that it would be pointless for the clinic to operate all day long without adequate resources and qualified staff nurses as patients’ around the village would still not get sufficient treatment.

As a result, Dr Ramathuba said that the department is still going to add one more nurse to alleviate the villagers’ crisis.

“Sicknesses doesn’t make appointments before striking. They don’t have specific time to attack patients, they always strike anytime.” The MEC stressed

“So that is why we have decided to develop a program of a 24 hour clinic operation at Mapela.”

The MEC also bemoaned the circumstances whereby patients are being sent back home without examinations due to a lack of determined health professionals at the clinic. She further said people must stop with their aim of pursuing the nursing profession in an attempt to alleviate poverty.

Dr Ramathuba further called on health officials to prioritise patients’ needs to reflect their true calling of the nursing profession.

“The nursing profession is a calling. We have certain nurses whom we don’t understand why they are here.”

“You cannot be a nurse if it’s not within you. Some do it to alleviate poverty and that’s not how it’s supposed to be but we are going to fix that as well.”
