Limpopo embarks on Township-Village Revitalization Imbizos

By: Mboni Mushiana

Over the next three months the Limpopo government through the department of Economic Development, Environment and Tourism will be visiting ten townships and villages in the province to listen, share ideas and communicate with communities on how we can revitalise and radically transform the township and village economies.

MEC Seaparo Sekoati had this to say in his 2017/2018 Budget Speech regarding the township and village economy revitalization, “The department will be embarking on township-village Imbizos with business formations to provide details of how the regulations will be implemented and solicit inputs which will culminate into the Limpopo Township and Village Revitalization Strategy.”

The business formations that the department will interact with range from street vendors, taverns, minibuses, spaza shops, burial societies, stokvels, hair salons, plumbing, panel-beating, home-based care, etc. The Township and Village Economy Revitalization Strategy builds on existing government support programmes aimed at accelerating the radical economic transformation agenda.

The strategy aims to achieve three key outcomes: Create an enabling and supporting environment based on eight strategic focus areas for township and village economy revitalization, establish the social and economic value of township and village economy, and ensure that the township and village enterprises become key players in the Limpopo economy.

After the three month road shows, the outcomes of the engagement with the township and village business formations will be incorporated into the Township-Village Revitalization strategy which is still in draft format and waiting for contributions. Mopani will be the first district to host the Imbizos at the Giyani Community Hall on 23 June, followed by Ga-Motupa on 30 June 2017.
