CoGHSTA awards excellence in the Human Settlement Sector

By: Rirhanzu Nkobyane and Maano Nekhavhambe

Stakeholders responsible for delivering quality human settlement in the Limpopo Province, were rewarded for their tremendous efforts during the 10th edition of the annual Govan Mbeki Awards held at Bolivia Lodge on the 19th September 2017.

Organised and administered by the Department of Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs (COGHSTA), the objectives of the awards are: To promote and encourage the culture of excellence amongst Human Settlement sector stakeholders; To create positive mind-sets in the public eye by reflecting that the government is delivering decent shelter and to restore the dignity of the disadvantaged South Africans.

The glittering event was attended by dignitaries such as the VhaVenda King, Toni Mphephu Ramabulana, MEC for COGHSTA Mme Makoma Makhurupetje and the MEC for Public Works, Roads and Infrastructure Azwinndini Jeremiah Ndou, who was representing the Premier.

In her speech, MEC Makhurupetje said the awards are also meant to motivate all stakeholders in the Human Settlement space to harness the resources in accelerating human settlement delivery to improve the lives of poverty stricken people. The provision of quality housing opportunities with secure tenure and access to water and sanitation, goes a long way towards restoring dignity to the previously disenfrechised. Mme Makhurupetje acknowledged the resilience of ANC stalwart ntate Ike Maphoto who is a patron of the Govan Mbeki Awards.

The Limpopo Province performed exceptionally well during the 2016/17 financial year by delivering a total of 10,527 new housing units against a target of 8,998 units. MEC Ndou acknowledged that more work still needs to be done to ensure that more quality houses are built in the province going forward. “Not withstanding all that we have achieved in the last three years, it is always very important that we guard against complacency. Resting on our laurels without doing much, will not help us to maintain our dignified spot amongst the provinces of our country. To upscale our delivery momentum, it will be important that we isolate some of the deficiencies that may hold back our progress”. MEC Ndou said

When all was said and done, Ms Tanya Coetzer the owner of Ixplore, took home the Best Emerging Woman Contractor in the Subsidy Market. Clinching the Award ahead of her competitors, Ms Coetzer expressed her delight for a dream come true.
