Limpopo Provincial Government, LTA backs Polokwane City and Baroka FC

By: Maano Nekhavhambe

In line with established practice from other provinces regarding the support of professional football teams playing their trade in the Premier Soccer League (PSL), the Limpopo Province Executive Council has approved that the Limpopo Tourism Agency (LTA) should, with the support of the Department of Sports, Arts and Culture negotiate and enter into a formal agreement with Polokwane City and Baroka Football Clubs.

LTA will roll out the support to the Limpopo Province based PSL duo utilising the funds from their current budget. In the event of a shortfall, the Department of Treasury will consider making additional funds available.

Despite narrowly escaping relegations last season, Baroka FC have enjoyed a dream start to the 2017/18 Absa Premiership campaign after recording four triumphs coupled with four draws, one loss, and occupies the top spot on the log, leading second placed Lamontville Golden Arrows by one point.

Meanwhile, arch rivals Polokwane City Football Club have endured a difficult start to the current campaign as they find themselves rooted at the bottom half of the table, occupying the 12th spot with nine points, after registering two wins, suffering four defeats coupled with three draws in their opening nine games.

The Limpopo Province residents would be anticipating a dramatic turnaround for Rise and Shine in order to keep their PSL status due to the fact that 30 matches will be played in Polokwane in front of their loyal fans.

The 30 games in Limpopo each season will play a crucial role in strengthening the economy of the province, tourism as well as creating jobs and business opportunities for local residents.
