By: Kanego Lewele

POLOKWANE: Limpopo Emergency Medical Services team [EMS] miraculously resuscitated a new born baby boy after spending hours been trapped inside the deep ends of the pit toilet in Magwai Village Ga-Matlala, near Polokwane.

It is believed that a 32 years old mentally unstable mother unexpectedly gave birth while trying to relieve herself in the dawn hours of Tuesday, the 14 October this year that is according to Mr. Robert Masubelele the acting provincial coordinator for EMS Tactical Rescue and Rapid Intervention Component [TRRIC].

Masubelele said they received a tipped call from one of the community member who heard a sound of a crying baby inside the pit toilet while passing in the vicinity and an ambulance was dispatched to the scene.

Masubelele indicated that upon arrival at the scene the EMS operational personnel found the baby still trapped helplessly inside the pit toilet.

“They immediately sought assistance from our tactical rescue and rapid intervention component and only God knows how when we arrived at the scene the baby was still alive and our tactical unit successfully managed to rescue the baby unharmed,” said Masubelele

Masubelele admitted that though it is not the first time they had faced such situation, he is still shocked and do not know how the baby could have survived after been trapped such long inside the pit toilet with his umbilical cord still hanging.

“This is one of its own and different from what we have seen before especially that the umbilical cord was still hanging and as if that was not enough, the mother apparently was not even aware that she actually gave birth,” Masubelele added.

Both the mother and the baby were taken to the nearest hospital, WF Knobel for further medical checks and the baby was certified to be in good health.

Meanwhile MEC Dr. Ramathuba expressed her excitement and applauded EMS personnel for their sterling work in responding to the heed and rescued the life of new born baby.

“I would like to extend my gratitude to EMS team for having responded to the emergency call with determination and calmly resuscitated the new born baby from the pit toilet,” said the MEC.
