Each year, on 24th March, the world marks World TB Day. Tuberculosis (TB) remains the world’s leading infectious killer, being responsible for the deaths on nearly 1.7 million people each year and representing the ninth leading cause of death globally. The day is an occasion to raise public awareness about the devastating health, social and economic consequences of tuberculosis and to step up efforts to end the global TB epidemic. This year World TB Day was commemorated under the theme:”Wanted: Leaders for a TB Free World”
On the 24th March 2018 during the commemoration of World TB Day, MEC Dr Phophi Ramathuba has officially launched Finding Tuberculosis Actively, Separating Safely, and Treating Effectivively Programme (FAST) at DR CN Phatudi Hospital in Tzaneen Local Municipality. “Tuberculosis death rate in Limpopo Province has declined from 12.3% to 9.9% as the result of commitment and support of Home Based Care Centres Volunteers in ensuring that patients take treatment on a regular basis. Limpopo, like the rest of the country is faced with an enormous burden of desease. Our objective is to continue on the path to reduce communicable disease such as HIV and Tuberculosis, wage a relentless fight against lifestyle non-communicable diseases such as high blood pressure and diabetes”. said MEC Dr Phophi Ramathuba
