MEC Makamu officially opens Nwanedi Packhouse

Limpopo MEC of Agriculture and Rural Development Mr Basikopo Makamu on Friday unveiled the Nwanedi pack house in the Musina local municipality, Vhembe district. The Nwanedi vegetables agri-hub was pronounced by the former president in the 2015 State of the Nation Address as flagship project for the current Medium Term Strategic Framework (MTSF) period of 2014-2019.

 

This was prompted by the realities and challenges that emerging farmers are going through with regard to technical skills, entrepreneurial skills, lack of appropriate production and market infrastructure.

Following up on the SONA pronouncement the Limpopo Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries and Small Enterprises Development Agency took the initiative to facilitate the provision of integrated enterprise development support to farmers and provision of technical infrastructure support.

The Nwanedi pack house of as an offshoot of this development initiative has seen the provision of a packaging and storage facility for 150 farmers in the area. These farmers will also be supported with infield irrigation infrastructure.

Envisaged spin offs of the development are the achievement of higher levels of production and greater contribution to food security from state and communal land. There will also be small holder farmer development and support for agrarian reform.

Added to these benefits there will be growth of sustainable rural enterprises and industries charecterised by strong rural-urban linkages, increased investment in agro-processing, trade development and access to markets and financial services.

The Nwanedi pack house is one of the initiatives to bring emerging farmers into the mainstream of the economy as fully fledged commercial farmers.

In his address during the opening ceremony of the pack house MEC Makamu said the immediate beneficiaries of the pack house and the infield irrigation system will never walk alone. The Department will continue to guide and support them for their sustainability and growth.

MEC Makamu urged stakeholders in agriculture and rural development to lend a hand to emerging farmers, so that they too play a significant role to guarantee the country food security and economic growth.

He was accompanied to the opening of the Nwanedi pack house by the mayor of Musina local municipality Cllr Mihloti Muhlope, Vho-Thovele Ratshibvumo Rambuda and beneficiary farmers organised under the Nwanedi Secondary Cooperative.
