MEC for Social Development Mapula Mokaba-Phukwana accompanied by the Health MEC Dr Phophi Ramathuba have officially opened The Rehabilitation Treatment Centre at the Seshego Hospital’s Luvhuwani Maanda Recreational Hall outside Polokwane.

The province is aligning their success with the objective of the Central Drug Authority (CDA) through the National Drug Master plan to have a country free of substance abuse.

Substance abuse addicts residing in Limpopo will no longer have to cross the provincial boarders to seek professional help, the new facility can accommodate up to 54 inpatients with services from of a team containing doctors, psychiatrists, nurses, psychologists and social workers.

“We have faced a number of obstacles in reaching the completion and functionality of the centre, but we have overcome them all and can now deliver on what we have promised the people of Limpopo – their own rehabilitation centre.” Mokaba-Phukwana said

Despite alcohol and other substance abuse being widely reported to be on the rise across the province, MEC Mokaba-Phukwana expressed her confidence in the Seshego Treatment Centre, citing that it would help minimise the usage of drugs.

She further highlighted the fact that majority of patients being treated for Substance Use Disorders in Limpopo Province are males (on 89%) compared to the females (currently on 11%). There has been an increase in the treatment of dependency on the drug (Nyaope), a dangerous substance combining cannabis and heroin; 60.3% of people treated were using Cannabis as their primary drug and; 51.4% of service users seek help for alcohol dependency which concerns the MEC.
