Limpopo Provincial Government celebrates Baroka FC TKO glory

By: Maano Nekhavhambe

Limpopo Province Premier Stanley Chupu Mathabatha has praised the newly crowned Telkom Knock-Out winners Baroka FC following their much desired triumph over Orlando Pirates at the Nelson Mandela Bay stadium in Port Elizabeth on Saturday, 12 December 2018.

Mathabatha said the Polokwane based team fought a good fight like soldiers and they deserves all the credits.

“We have never doubted that Baroka will lift up the cup. This cup being the first for Limpopo soccer team this season means a million words and a million of celebrations. On behalf of the people of Limpopo, I wish to welcome the boys back for giving us an early Christmas gift.” Mathabatha hails

Despite their ‘’under-dogs’’ tag, Bakgakga Ba Ga-Mphahlele overcame all odds to defeat the star studded Buccaneers, 3-2 on penalties after a 2-2 stalemate, and claim their maiden silverware in top flight football since they were promoted back in 2016.

Baroka broke the deadlock to much jubilation when Jemondre Dickens lashed home a nice lay-off into the top corner following a blunder from Pirates goalkeeper Siyabonga Mpontshane at the stroke of half-time.

Pirates leveled matters courtesy of Musa Nyatama’s instant reaction which guided him to pounce on a loose ball off a Justin Shonga free-kick for a first-time finish.

Baroka restored their lead from the penalty spot, in extra-time, as captain Mduduzi Mdantsane blasted home with his left-foot into the bottom corner, giving Mpontshane no chance.

Bucs pulled another rabbit out the bag after Thembinkosi Lorch sneaked in at the far post to beat Baroka shot-stopper Elvis Chipezeze in the bottom corner with a low header after a pin-point cross from Shonga.

A win for Baroka made history for Limpopo Province, as they have become the first ever PSL team based in the province to conquer in cup competitions.

Prior to the much anticipated trip to Port Elizabeth for a cup final showdown, Bakgakga also received blessings and well wishes from the Royal House at Ga-Mphahlele and as promised they will take the lucrative Ziwa Mo trophy to the Chief, Kgoshikgadi Mphahlele, upon their return to the province on Wednesday afternoon.

However, they are expected to parade the Telkom Knock-Out trophy in Polokwane on Thursday, 13 December 2018.

Premier Mathabatha and MEC for Sports, Arts and Culture Mme Thandi Moraka are expected to be part of the open bus parade.
