We have reasons to celebrate our Freedom - Says Limpopo Premier

By: Maano Nekhavhambe

Limpopo Premier Stanley Chupu Mathabatha has on Saturday, 27 April 2019, led the provincial government delegates in commemorating the 25th edition of the National Freedom Day, which also marked the 6th national general elections under a democratic government dating back to 1994, at the Bakenberg stadium outside Mokopane; Mogalakwena Local Municipality.

This years’ Freedom Day was commemorated under the theme: “Celebrating 25 years of Freedom” and Mathabatha believes that Limpopo residents have all the reasons to celebrate a hard fought freedom.

“You have all the reasons to celebrate this freedom. Let us celebrate the 25 years of our hard fought freedom. Because all these privileges we have today, we did not enjoy them prior to 1994.” Mathabatha said

The transition from apartheid into a democratic society has largely been a success and addressing thousands of residents from all five districts within the province, Premier Mathabatha reflected on the province’s 25-years of democracy.

Amongst other achievements, he has highlighted the fact that over 1.6 million pupils across Limpopo have access to free and fair education whilst at the same time enjoying the feeding scheme benefits at their respective schools, thanks to the democratic government.

94% of people in Limpopo including those in deep crural areas have access to electricity, water and proper sanitations, something that was unthinkable under the Apartheid Government.

Concerning the Health department, the Limpopo Provincial Governments donates a total of 15 Ambulances to public hospitals every year unlike in the previous regime.

Most notably, Limpopo leads the charts when it comes to building Reconstructions and Development Program (RDP) houses all over South Africa.

Over 43 000 RDP houses were built in Limpopo Province since 1994 and title deeds were given to the recipients unlike in the Apartheid regime where the majority of black people used to rent four roomed houses.

’’If you say you don’t have reasons to celebrate Freedom Day, then I don’t understand what you value most in life. If these are not reasons enough for you to celebrate this day, what else is reason enough to celebrate?.” Mathabatha questioned
