Photojournalist laid to rest

The late Mr Elijar Mushiana who was a Photojournalist from Sowetan Newspaper who also worked for different publications as freelance photojournalist was laid to rest at Tshimbupfe Vuwani on 2 August 2014.


Mr Elijar Mushiana was born on 28 July 1973 at Tshimbupfe Chielfarm village. In the past 20 years, he worked for different publications as a freelance photojournalist. These include the Limpopo Mirror, City Press, Capricorn Voice, Sunday Sun, Sunday World, Sunday Times, Drum Magazine, Pace Magazine and Next Magazine. At time of his death, he was Sowetan’s photographer in Limpopo based in Polokwane.

The late Mr Mushiana was the journalist to establish an office in the heart of Thohoyandou. This was followed by the opening of his own news agency called Northern Independent Press Association (NIPA) in 1993. He was a founding member of Vhembe Media Forum where he served as chairperson for two years.

As a prolific and versatile media practitioner, late Mushiana won more than 20 awards in addition to being crowned the 2012 Sowetan Photographer of the Year. A community builder in his own right, late Mushiana taught photographic skills to local young journalist free of charge. During his death, the late Mr Mushiana was furthering his studies with the University of South Africa. May his soul rest in peace!
