LIMPOPO GOVERNMENT PREPARES TO TACKLE
FOOD PRICES
The establishment of agri-entrepreneurs and
consumer cooperatives is one of the proposed
viable measures the provincial government
will establish in order to help minimise the
effects of sky-rocketing food prices.
This was revealed at a routine meeting of
the Limpopo Executive Council (Exco) held on
April 2008 in Polokwane. This was the first
meeting of the Executive Council in the new
financial year 2008/09.
The provincial government is required to put
in place as it joins the rest of the country
in fighting this scourge of unaffordable
basic necessities - food included. In this
regard, the provincial Department of
Agriculture presented a draft Integrated
Food Security Strategy for the province.
The strategy asserts that there is a need
for government and communities to complement
each other in the production and provision
of food.
According to the spokesperson of government,
Mr Mogale Nchabeleng, other measures to be
taken include the continuous supply of seeds
to beneficiaries of low cost houses to
establish gardens in their households.
“The ongoing revival of Irrigation Schemes
to enhance investment in rural
infrastructure in villages and vast
farmlands of the province will also be one
of the cornerstones of Limpopo's fight
against these unprecedented food prices,”
Nchabeleng added.
Exco further mandated the Social Cluster of
government, particularly, the Department of
Health and Social Development, to work with
agriculture in refining the draft strategy
and, above all, lead a campaign that will
see the government encouraging and educating
communities about the significance of their
involvement in farming and other food
production/preservation mechanisms in
general.
