SADC Malaria Day
02 October 2006
The MEC for the Department of Health and Social Development, Mr. Seaparo Sekoati
will be a guest speaker at the SADC ( South African Development Community)
Malaria Day commemoration to be held in Limpopo on Friday 03 November 2006 in
Vhembe district.
This year’s focus is on Indoor Residual House Spraying with insecticides, the
main strategy for malaria prevention and control used in South Africa.
The theme: SADC region accelerating and scaling up Indoor Residual Spraying with
DDT.
About 12 million people fall sick from malaria in the whole world every year
while in the SADC region we have around 300 000 people dying of malaria every
year. Yet this illness is preventable and curable, hence the department of
Health and Social Development is raising the profile of malaria in Limpopo
which is one of the three malaria prune provinces in South Africa.
South Africa has had some extraordinary successes against malaria in recent
years through the provision of effective drugs and vigilant vector control. As
South Africa, we are implementing cross boarder malaria control between
Zimbabwe and Mozambique in order to prevent deaths for malaria. This is a need
for private sector support for malaria control particularly at community level
where there is a greatest need for education and awareness.
