About Us
The Department of Health and Social Development Head Office is situated at 18
College Street Polokwane. In its intention to build a better life for all the
people of Limpopo, the Department shall ensure access to Health and Social
Development services. Department is committed through its various developmental
programmes to ensure sufficient education of health and social issues to the
people of Limpopo so as to attain set objectives.
The department comprises of sub offices in all five district; namely:

Many of our clinics have complied with the National Adolescent Friendly Clinic
Initiative (NAFCI) standards and have therefore been declared
adolescent-friendly. It is our intention to ensure that all our clinics are
ultimately also declared youth friendly. The department has adopted the
emergency medical services expansion and optimization plan. A total number of
84 new vehicles have been bought and are beings converted into fully equipped
ambulance.
The Department is amongst the few in the country that realize the improvement in
the management of TB. The cure rate has improved from 53, 6% in 2003 to 66, 4%
in 2004. The Multi Drug Resistance (MDR) TB hospital in Modimolle: H.F Odendal
is now fully functional and was officially opened on 16 February 2006. The
first patients were admitted at this unit on 12 January 2006.
A total of 31 hospitals in the province have been declared baby-friendly. The
Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative is sponsored by the World Health Organization
and UNICEF and is a world-wide effort to improve breastfeeding rates.
Six Social Development One Stop centers. Have been completed in the current
financial year and 12 others will be completed during this year under review.
These centers provide integrated social development service like social work
services, community development services and social security services.
We are encouraged by the selfless efforts of many of our partners. We have to
double our efforts of being a Province in which all can experience an improving
quality of life, enjoy equal human rights, with access to opportunities that
freedom has brought us and continue to commit ourselves to do everything that
is necessary and possible to attain these objectives.
