Celebrating women empowerment
The recognition of women’s impact to liberation struggle will forever be engraved in South African history, as women get recognized for the role they continue to play in government and private sectors dating back to the iconic march of 1956.
Launching the Women’s month at Moses Mabotho Civic Hall in the Fetakgomo Tubatse Local Municipality, MEC for Sports Arts and Culture Ms Nakedi Kekana when addressing guests said government will continue to accelerate socio economic opportunities for women empowerment.
The launch outlined programmes and activities that will be held during the month of August in honoring all women in the province which includes ongoing Gender Based Violence dialogues with training, workshops, Justice safety and protection seminars.
“We have provided women with necessary skills to empower them in transportation, Small, Medium and Micro Enterprises (SMME) sectors for economic empowerment because women are being used as fronters in male dominated industries and sidelined when it comes to sharing dividends.” said Kekana
The MEC has called out women to stop being abusers to other women especially in family matters to protect relatives that have crossed the wrong side of the law.
In the attendance was Commission of Gender Equality representative Ms Nkhesani Hlekani who shared tips on how women can get assistance for child maintenance, divorce and discrimination from their institution at a free service.
Celebrating the economic emancipation, a 50 year old Matete Mkhonazi who is a single parent to two daughters says there is definitely progress in transformation and recognition for women since 1994. Matete is a beneficiary of government empowerment programmes. She is one of those that were enrolled at FET college in 2022 to do fashion design program and later was awarded with sewing by machines by SEDA to establish her business.
The women’s day commemoration will be held on the 9th at Rebone Stadium in the Mogalakwena Municipality where the provincial leadership is expected to address women about programmes that will continue to empower women to be included in the economic space and leadership.
