Limpopo hosts first G20 community outreach in an African Soil

Since South African Presidency appointment to the group of 20 (G20) on the 1st of December 2024, Limpopo is the first province to host G20 Outreach Programme which will be rolled around the country.

The historic event of an African country presiding over the largest economic forum in the world was held in Thohoyandou on Friday, 7 March 2025 supported by the Limpopo Provincial Government leadership, Legislature and Diplomats from developing and developed countries such as South Korea, China, Japan, Singapore, Namibia, Nigeria Senegal, Indonesia and Germany amongst others that plays significant role in the world’s economy.

G20 represents about 85% of the world’s Gross Domestic product (GDP) and 75% of global trade, which is about two thirds of the world population and includes trade, health, agriculture, climate change and sustainable development which are Limpopo’s priorities.

Addressing delegates, Deputy Minister for International Relations and Cooperation Thandi Moraka said South African G20 Outreach Programme seeks to address the three strategic priorities of Government of National Unity (GNU) to reduce poverty and tackle the high cost of living, rebuild a capable ethical and developmental state and to drive inclusive growth with job creation.

“ With the G20 presidency platform, South Africa will advance the country’s relations to shine the spotlight on the African Union’s Agenda 2026, champion the aspirations and interests of the developing world which include achieving the United Nations 2030 agenda of sustainable development goals.” remarked Moraka

The G20 is a platform to engage in sustainable development by addressing financing model of African countries to be able to repay their debts, promote investments and job opportunities. During its presidency, South Africa will champion collaboration between its stakeholders to the benefit of Limpopo province and the county in general, including African countries by strengthening economic and financial relations.

Speaking to representatives of G20 countries, Limpopo Premier Dr Phophi Ramathuba emphasized the meaningful opportunities presented to her province to be the first to hold G20 Outreach Programme.

“G20 community outreach is more than just a formal engagement. It is a bridge between international policy and local realities. It is an opportunity for our business community and youth to engage with global economic conversations and position themselves to benefit from South African’s role in the G20”.
Dr Ramathuba further said Limpopo’s readiness to engage with the world symbolizes the recognition of the province’s potential in the world’s largest economy by, standing not only as a contributor to South African’s economy but an opportunity for the African continent on a global trade and investment platform.

South Africa is set to convene world leaders G20 Social Summit in Johannesburg in November 2025 under its presidency for the first time in an African soil. More than 85 meetings will be held throughout the country with 5 of them in Limpopo and more than 40 countries delegates forming part of the meeting in November.

The South African Presidency term will come to an end on 30 November 2025, engagements will allow the country to market its rich diverse culture, tourism and contribute to creating temporary employment during the more than 80 meetings with large delegation from G20 members. EC
