A celebration of the bold, brave and beautiful
The provincial government sojourned the Makhwibidung village of Tzaneen on the 14th of March 2025 to celebrate International Women’s Day under the theme: “For All Women & Girls: Rights. Equality. Empowerment.”
Centuries ago on the 08th of March, courageous women took it upon themselves to challenge the system that alienated the female gender from having equal opportunities as men. As a result, International Women’s Day has now become a global phenomenon where women’s rights are celebrated and promoted.
Ably, when addressing her key remarks on behalf of the Premier, MEC for Education Ms. Mavhungu Lerule-Ramakhanya mentioned how the gathering is also a platform to celebrate social and economic achievements of these “Mbokodos.” Hence, she boldly expressed: “It is a great honour to all women who marched before us to see this new generation taking up space in sectors such as agriculture, technology, engineering and more.”
Echoing the same sentiments, the representative of Progressive Women’s Movement of South Africa, Ms Dikeledi Mmetle admired the success trajectory of females since the adoption of the Women’s Charter in 1954 which is fixed on achieving full and equal participation of women across all domains of life.
Although women still bear the scars of oppression and inequality, they are also still “rewriting the narrative” as MEC Lerule-Ramakhanya said, and breaking boundaries while at it. She urged all men to collaboratively abolish any form of patriarchy in their homes and pledge to promote economic justice, safety and representation of women in their lives and those around them.
It is indeed a continuous fight for an environment where women and girls have equal rights, equal opportunities and equal respect. “Let us plant seeds of change that will bloom for generations,” finished the MEC. PM
