Fetakgomo-Tubatse Special Economic Zone sparks unfiltered public opinion in Sekhukhune
The scorching sun was not the only thing blazing through the air on the afternoon of 10 April 2025, but the palpable tension between Sekhukhune residents and key stakeholders during the participation session regarding the proposed Fetakgomo-Tubatse Special Economic Zone (FTSEZ).
Premier Dr Phophi Ramathuba together with the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition led the engagement with the aim of granting locals the opportunity to express their thoughts, concerns and suggestions regarding the proposed SEZ. Indeed, every person from the area piled up in the marquee, ready to interact.
Kick-starting the talk, Premier Dr Ramathuba boldly opened the can of worms detailing the positive impacts this proposed SEZ will bring in the community and the lives of members residing therein. This includes the creation of jobs, acceleration of economic growth and modern infrastructure development.
“Let me assure you that this proposed SEZ will be a game-changer, a multi-sectoral economic zone that will stimulate activity in critical areas including mining inputs manufacturing, renewable energy, mineral processing, logistics, agro-processing, general manufacturing and aftermarket production,” enlightened the Premier.
From concept to completion, Premier emphasised that this project is real, practical, and most importantly, for the benefit of people. “Let us make Sekhukhune not just a district known for its mineral wealth but a district known for its economic vision, industrial success and empowered communities where local entrepreneurship is encouraged for a transformative and sustainable society,” alluded Dr Ramathuba.
Answering the what, where and why regarding the designation of the proposed SEZ was CEO of the Fetakgomo-Tubatse Industrial Park, Mr Kgopong. He entailed that the SEZ will be located in Steelpoort between the Samancor Smelter and Lion Ferrochrome Smelter. It is a strategic placement that will have access to natural resources and close proximity to key markets.
The proposed SEZ will focus on the beneficiation of the platinum group metals, chrome and vanadium resources; agro-processing and renewable energy technologies among others. Essentially, the intention is to create a new smart-city that will attract local and foreign investors while stimulating economic activities in the province.
After lengthy presentations by key stakeholders, gloves were off and caps unscrewed as attendees received the chance to respond to the proposed hub. One fellow stood to plead with the project managers to not ignore young people in the area regarding employment opportunities. He revealed that many of them are competent, skilled and equipped enough to get any job done, but never receive any room to exercise their potential. Another gentleman emphasised that the SEZ must prioritise local beneficiation instead of ‘outsiders’, meaning locals have to be the first receivers of the fruits of this project. Moreover, a representative of the local persons living with disabilities forum highlighted that those with special needs must also be considered when there are any opportunities available and provide them with skills-training if need be.
Ably, all national, provincial and local leaders present noted the views expressed and assured consistent engagements with the community moving forward. Most importantly, all participants present agreed to the proposed Fetakgomo-Tubatse Special Economic Zone to be designated in their town. PM
