Murena Netshitangani wins best African film at Future World Film Festival

Premier Dr. Phophi Ramathuba has congratulated Mr. Murena Netshitangani for his historic achievement following his triumph at the 78th annual Canes Film Festival in France.

With his groundbreaking Tshivenda film titled ‘Lubunyu’, Netshitangani won the Best African Film accolade on the 28th of April 2025.
Lubunyu means “Naked intruder” and was inspired by a haunting real-life experience from Netshitangani’s childhood, and it (Lubunyu) delves into the heart of a village torn between tradition and change, exploring themes of justice, deception, and identity.
It was filmed at Ha-Khakhu Makuleni, Limpopo.

Netshitangani who hails from Ha-Khakhu near the famous Lake Fundudzi, Vhembe District, has placed both Limpopo and South African Film Making on the global stage with his victory over strong contenders which includes the highly rated Nigerian Movie titled ‘My Fathers’ Shadow’ which many anticipated to walk away with the prestigious accolade.

Dr. Ramathuba said this is a defying moment for the creative sector in Limpopo Province and South Africa at large.

She further said a dream natured in the quiet villages of Venda can also echo across the world’s greatest stages.

Murena Emmanuel Netshitangani has demonstrated that dreams nurtured in the quiet villages of Venda can echo across the World’s biggest stages. We are immensely proud of him for carrying the heart of Venda and indeed the spirit of Limpopo to the world.” Said Dr. Ramathuba

Notably, Lubunyu features the star-studded casting including Elsie Rasalanavho, Tshamano Sebe, McDonald Ndou, Hangwani Ramakuela, Murendeni Ramunenyiwa, Azwidowi Tshirangwana and Nokukhanya Luthuli respectively. MN
