Gauta BMX cyclists trio welcomed back to Limpopo
Karabo Mokoo, Maxwell Ndou and Gauta Mohlakoane will be names engraved in South African’s memories after the trio travelled 1 700km journey from Burgersfort, Limpopo to Cape Town to raise funds for their bike club.
On the 24th of April, residents of Burgersfort town in Limpopo province where the three hails from, braved the rainy weather and gathered at Tubatse Crossing Mall in the Sekhukhune District to witness the welcome of men that made history in the province and captivated many people’s hearts on social media.
Social media platforms got the trio trending for days as they received warm messages of support while touching many including President Cyril Ramaphosa who congratulated them.
Falling under the category of youth in South African as they are all below the age 25, these members of Gauta BMX have been on a mission to travel and complete their journey using only their bikes.
The 14-day journey on the road without funding and backup and, one of them sustaining a knee injury did not demoralize them, they kept on paddling against all odds to inspire and raise awareness against Gender Based Violence.
A journey that subjected them to sleeping at police and petrol stations under unpleasant weather came with endurance and achieving what they hoped for, funds towards their bike club.
In their statement they released just before they embarked on their journey, they outlined that over and above raising funds, they were using the journey to spark conversation about raising boy child into responsible men in the time where Gender Based Violence statistics keeps on rising in the country.
In solidarity, Limpopo Premier Dr Phophi Ramathuba said the provincial government will assist them to realise their objective of using the cycling club as a vehicle to raise awareness against substance abuse and other projects they will be working on.
