The Limpopo Provincial Government continued with love and kindness activities beyond the 18 July, the day set aside by the United Nations (UN) to celebrate the late first South African democratic president, Nelson Mandela.
The extended activities were held in Lebu village, Lephalale in the Waterberg District Municipality on 25 July. Attended by International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) deputy minister Thandi Moraka, Premier Dr Phophi Ramathuba and The Korean Embassy Ambassador Yang brought hope to the community of Lebu.
Activities included handing over of 100 sewing machines donated by the Korean Embassy in boosting local skills and business opportunities in producing locally made garments, donation of groceries and shoes to Phetogo Home Base Care Centre and toys to Ramoleleke creche.
“ We are celebrating this South African giant international because of his love for children and communities. Mandela month means empowering people, the donated sewing machines will enable women and youth to grow their businesses by supplying locals with protective clothing sewed locally and not rely on imports. This is what Mandela month means to government, empowering locals” said Moraka
The 2025 theme of “ it is in our hands to combat poverty and inequality” Premier Dr Ramathuba reiterated that Mandela Month means service delivery to communities. The provincial government committed to engaging with various stakeholders to give advance training to those who received sewing machines and, to partner with the private sector to source their protective clothing from sewing cooperatives in the area.
“This partnership will ensure equality between big companies and locals at a small scale initiated during Mandela months activities in the Waterberg district. This initiative will combat poverty aligning with the 2025 theme which speaks to the legacy of the great Nelson Mandela”.
Mme Mokgadi could not hold her contentment to witness the commitment to the people of Lephalale.
“ I am 70 years and grateful that Mandela Day made a difference to our community. Our children will benefit from what government brought us. We are happy that the day did not end on his birthday 18 July. The old man is still looking upon us with great impact in our lives, Viva Mandela Viva” exclaimed Mokgadi
The provincial government will continue with Mandela Month activities throughout districts in honoring the late president until end of July. EC
