Government vows to combat GBV Cases at Kgapane Village

Justice and Constitutional Development Minister Mmamoloko Kubaye has addressed scourge of community members during a Justice, Crime Prevention and Security Cluster (JCPS) Imbizo held at Sasko Community Hall at Kgapane, Mopani District, on Friday 08 August 2025.

The Imbizo which is part of the Women’s Month activities, was held under the theme “GBVF Prevention Through Education And Community Engagement”

In her capacity as Co-Chairperson of the JCPS, Kubayi was accompanied by Limpopo Premier Dr. Phophi Ramathuba, Deputy Minister in the Presidency Miss Nonceba Mhlauli and Minister of Social Development Nokuzola Tolashe.

The Imbizo aimed to bring services closer to the people through a collaborative effort from departments such as Social Development and Police.

It also brought together government, civil society, traditional leaders and local communities to strengthen attempts to eliminate Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF).

Proceedings began with a briefing in the morning, Minister Kubayi, Dr Ramathuba and entourage then proceeded to the Balobedu Police Station to monitor how they deal with cases in terms of GBV between Social Development and Police victim support approaches before proceeding to the Kgapane Magistrate Court to examine how they are handling cases of this nature and other workloads.

With residents in and around Kgapane village anxious about crime particularly during the night when criminal gangs lack around, Kubayi, says government will intensify efforts to ensure that the justice cluster works effectively so that members of the public have faith in the justice system.

“What we can say is that there is a need for us to intensify a coordinated approach of us as a cluster working together not only at the national level, but from provinces to local. Because we do find out that as we go down, you find a big, fragmented approach, so that’s one of the areas we have identified. We want to improve in terms of the work.” Said Kubayi

As the country commemorates the 69th anniversary of Women’s Day, Minister Kubayi welcomed the recent arrest of an alleged serial rapist who is linked to 9 cases in the Maake area outside Tzaneen.

She said the arrest of Matome Modiba is a victorious step towards curbing cases of GBV.

It was also confirmed that more than 22 000 suspects were arrested for gender-based violence, femicide, sexual offences and crimes against children in the previous financial year nationwide.
