Newly appointed road contractor introduced to the Sekgosese community
18 August 2025 marked exactly 30 working days since the provincial government visited the 32 kilometers D15 Road from Morebeng stretching towards D3232 into Sekgosese villages in the Mopani District as part of service delivery oversight that was conducted on the 9th of July 2025.
The R400 million construction project was commissioned in 2017 but the contractor abandoned the project even after being paid millions of rands. In 2022 President Cyril Ramaphosa visited the stalled project to inspect progress and since then, not much has changed.
After prompting investigation by the department of Public Works, Roads and Infrastructure which revealed non performance of the contractor, Premier Dr Phophi Ramathuba instructed the department and Road Agency Limpopo (RAL) to probe forensic investigations and, allow an appointment of a new contractor to finalise the construction while awaiting investigations outcome.
During the oversight visit, a commitment was made by the Premier to the community of Sekgosese and nearby villages that a new contractor will be appointed and, introduced to the community to upgrade the gravel to tar road which was abandoned.
As promised in the month of July 2025, the provincial government has on the 18th of August re visited the area, but this time was to introduce the newly appointed contractor to the community.
Mathothoka Trading cc which is the appointed contractor, has committed to finalising what was meant to be a four year project but currently in its 8th year before the end of 2025 at the tune of R107 483 304.
“I don’t have much to say, my talk is through the work I do. What I can commit to is to assure the community and the provincial government that, this road will be fininalised and operational by the end of this year 2025.”
Dr Ramathuba has pleaded with the community to be patient and work together with the contractor and, not interfere with infights of becoming sub contracts and halting the project because some did not get an opportunity to work on it.
“ The reason we introduced the contractor to the community is because we want them to know the contractor and work together. We don’t want to hear that tyres have been burned because they want to stop the project as they don’t know the service provider. Fighting will not resolve anything but will delay the finalization of already prolonged project. Not everyone will be a sub-contractor, but they will be projects that those who did not participate in this project will be considered in other upcoming projects.” Pleaded Dr Ramathuba EC
