Limpopo celebrates Nelson Mandela Day

Premier Dr. Phophi Ramathuba led the Limpopo Provincial Government during the annual Nelson Mandela Day celebrations at Mookgophong Community Hall, Waterberg District on Thursday, 23 July 2026.

The United Nations (UN) declared the 18th of July as the Nelson Mandela Day back in 2009 to honor the Legacy and values of the late former state President Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela.

The 17th edition of the Nelson Mandela Day was commemorated world-wide, and residents of Limpopo showed their solidarity with the initiative by devoting 67 minutes of their time to engage in community service under the theme “It is still in our hands to create a better world for all who live in it.”

Premier Dr. Ramathuba said government has chosen to express the spirit of humanity through actions by donating blankets to an old age home and assisting child headed households in the Mookgophong area as a way of honoring Madiba’s legacy.

Premier Ramathuba said elders are societies living libraries’ as they carry a beautiful wealth of life experience and history that serves as a compass to help them face the future with courage and deserves to be celebrated.

“When a society forgets its elders, it burns down its own history, but when we cherish them, we safeguard our cultural heritage.

Beyond emotional support, our seniors provide the practical wisdom and stability that help households navigate life’s complex challenges. Their active involvement in daily family life fosters deep intergenerational bonding, ensures a robust social support system and creates a nurturing environment where all members feel valued and secure.” Dr. Ramathuba accentuated
